Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I choose pet sitting rather than pet boarding? Most pets are happier in their own homes and adjust better to their owner's absence and experience less anxiety when they remain in their own home environment. Pet sitting makes this possible, by having someone visit your home one or more times a day to care for your pets. In addition to feeding your pets and ensuring they have clean water / cages etc, we play with our pets, clean litter boxes and cages and administer oral medications. We can walk your dogs and perform other pet related duties. This is why in-home pet care is the pet preferred method of holiday and travel care.
Our pet sitters also carry our other important home-care services whilst you are away, to give your house a lived-in feel. We will collect your mail each day, pick up newspapers, places bins out for collection, open and close curtains and blinds and turn lights on and off in the house.
How many visits a day do you provide for pets? We leave that up to you. For dogs we recommend a minimum of 2 visits a day. Most people request at least two visits a day and usually request a walk for their dog during one of those visits. For cats and other animals we will usually only need to visit once a day. We offer a minimum of 1 visit per day - we do not skip days.
Are you Fully Insured? YES! We have public liability insurance, provided by Barker Meier. Our insurance certificate is available for you to inspect at any time.
How long is each visit? The amount of time we spend at your home depends on the number of animals you have, Most visits last around 20-30 minutes, but if you have several animals we may be there longer. Our visits are charged by service, not the amount of time we spend with your pets. If you would like us to walk your dog, we are able to offer this as an extra service.
Are my house keys kept safe and secure whilst I am away? All keys are kept locked in a safe when we are not visiting your home. Keys are identified by a code which we keep separately to the keys.
How do I pay for your services? Payment can be made in cash, bank transfer or credit card (5% surcharge applies when paying via credit card). We ask for a 25% deposit at the time of booking and the remainder of the fee prior to the sit. All sits must be paid for in full, in advance of the sit.
Is my personal information kept confidential? Yes, we do not disclose any client information to third parties. Only your pet sitter will have access to your personal information and be given a set of keys.
What happens if my pet becomes sick whilst I am away? If we find that your pet is ill, we will contact your preferred vet. We ask that you contact your vet prior ro your holiday, informing them of your absences and arranging an account with them for the duration of your time away.
What do I leave out for the pet sitter? Please ensure that there is sufficient food for the duration of our visits. If we need to purchase food on your behalf there will be a $20 charge, on top of the cost of the food purchased. Other items you need to stock up on before you leave include: cat litter, pet treats, medical items (if needed) and any other items to ensure your pet is comfortable in your absence.
How far in advance should I book? Ideally we would like at least 1 weeks notice for all bookings, however, we realise that this may not always be possible, and will try to accommodate you if we are able to at short notice. We do get fully booked, especially at peak times, so the sooner you are able to book, the better.
Why do you have a free initial consultation? Our free initial consultation is to allow you to get to know us and for us to meet you and your pets. During the consultation we will discuss your pet's individual requirements and any special needs. We will familiarise ourselves with your pet's daily routine, so that we can ensure that your pet is well looked after whilst you are away.
How much notice do you need for a cancellation? Cancellations may be made up to 48 hours in advance of the first scheduled visit. After that time a cancellation fee equivalent to one visit may be charged.
